our karaoke session with them =) (rach there)
i believe at one look u wldnt believe these ppl only have less than a yr to live. its depressing to be in a hospice, knowing their fate, knowing that all that u can do for them now is probably the last bit of happiness they will experience. but stepping in there with the folks, (some who are only 40+) was an unforgettable experience. What greeted you werent weary or downcast faces. The mood in there wasnt all that melancholy and spiritless.
Infact, the folks gamely joined in our chicken dance & chorichori (indian dance), sang with us and played passing the parcels. They are Not just like u and me, they are people suffering from terminal diseases, they may even be disabled in one way or another. Yet they offered what the least they could give - SMILES.
so many times, my frens and i had to look away to shed a tear or two. so many times we wondered silently why their life had to end so soon. so many times we wondered if the next time we come again, will they still be there?
when the folks were still in the hospice, my class made the whole place as funky and vibrant as possible. we wanted to do our very last bit, we would do anything just to make them happy.
but after the folks left. there was nothing but a sudden silence filling the entire place. we cried uncontrollably.it was as though we alrd knew the time we saw them boarding the van, was our last.
one uncle who was very sporty actually told my fren this ' you guys are so brave. we have all contracted illness & diseases, yet you guys are here to make us happy'
another said ' im so happy that you all are here. Must always come back here to visit us ok? '
by the end of the day i still cldnt figured out why they can be such brave souls. why sometimes young ppl like us cant do the same? they made us feel so appreciated regardless wadeva mistakes we made in our dance item or in our singing. It was just a day of interaction yet i felt this common bond with them. i may not be able to speak dialects, nor am i a good entertainer, but i just hope to do my part to make their last days the happiest of their life.
we dont add days to life, we add life to days
